Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Interdisciplinary Studies Department! Our unique department is made up of eight interdisciplinary programs that offer opportunities to study ideas and obtain skills that will enable you to better understand and participate in the world around you. A commitment to critical thinking, public engagement, social justice, and diversity is shared by all of our programs, and we give students more room to experiment than they might find in a single discipline.

The Department offers a Bachelor of Arts in African & African Diaspora Studies (AADS) and minors in AADS, American Studies, Asian Studies, Gender & Women’s Studies, Latin American & Latino Studies, Peace Studies, and Religious Studies. We also offer a Master of Arts in American Studies and some courses in Science, Technology, and Society. Students can cross disciplinary boundaries in order to critically engage with the world around them, whether on campus, in the local community, or abroad. Interdisciplinary research is on the cutting edge of problem solving in a number of areas, inside and outside of the humanities (social sciences, sciences, business, education, etc.). A number of student organizations, such as those in AADS and AMST, complement what happens inside the classroom.

ISD faculty members have demonstrated their commitment to diversity and engagement from a global perspective by participating in study abroad programs and conferences around the world. Many of them have won awards for their teaching, research, and service. As a relatively small department, we take our commitment to students very seriously, and we spend time with each individual to help you work out a program that best matches your interests.

If you are looking for ways to connect the ideas you are learning in your varied classes, work closely with professors on your research or engagement projects, sharpen your critical thinking, writing, and problem-solving skills, find internships that match your academic interests, or simply find new ways to study and work on issues about which you feel passionate, Interdisciplinary Studies may be the place for you. Please stop in and check out "the coolest department on campus!"
